Guide To Holidaying In Herefordshire

A guide by Tasha Savell

Herefordshire A county which is a patchwork of fields, meadows and small mixed woodlands, held together by calmly flowing streams and rivers, bridleways, footpaths and country roads. The economy is controlled by agriculture, with the farming of both crops, mainly fruit, and cattle. With the exception of one city and a few small towns, the countryside embraces quiet villages, farmhouses and hamlets; usually situated around an ideal focus such as a pub or church.

The city of Hereford's main purpose is to act as a centre for the livestock and farming. It is a lively market place and shopping city with many interesting small shops. You will also find it quite lovely to walk along the river and enjoy a drink or two.

Check out the Cider Museum and pick up a few tips on how to create your own!

The Herefordshire Museum and Art Gallery gives you a great insight to the history and lives of the local people, with hands on elements to keep the whole family amused. Sit at a Victorian desk and try to write on the slates!

Shipley Gardens is a Roman dwelling originally with the gardens having been developed forty years ago. Sat in a beautiful setting, you will truly appreciate the hundreds of birds, insects, small mammals and butterflies of which the garden is home to.

The Old House is one of the country's finest black and white built houses, deep in the heart of the city. Explore room to room and get the family involved in the activities on the ground floor.
Ross-on-Wye is based on a sandstone cliff overlooking a meander in the River Wye. From miles away, the spire of the 13th century St. Mary's Church is visible. Fishing and walking along the banks is an easy and popular pastime along with exploring the shops.

Ledbury is in the east of the county and is named after the River Leadon which flows through the parish. There is the Market House in the centre, another piece of fine black and white architecture which was built in 1653 by the King's carpenter, John Abel.

Other places you should try to visit are: Leominster, Bromyard and Kington, as they are all unique and stunning in their own ways!
