Location
Barra is one of the two Southernmost inhabited islands of the Outer Hebrides, being approximately 8 miles long and 5 miles across.
The main port and focus of population on Barra is Castlebay, which is on the South of the island.
The centre of the island is dominated by hills with most of the crofts and crofting townships being situated either along the coasts or in glens, where these occur.
The West and North of Barra has areas of low lying land, characterised by grasslands, sand dunes and shellsand beaches.

Ceum a Bhealaich is a self-contained, well equipped flat is situated at the foot of Ben Tangaval in a quiet location just outside Castlebay, with exceptional views of Ben Heaval (1260ft) and the surrounding countryside.
It is approximately one mile from the Castlebay Ferry Terminal, hotels, shops, post office and bank, and half a mile from the Heritage Centre, swimming pool and local library.
Ben Tangaval itself stretches majestically from the east to the west coast and is abundant in wildlife, flowers and views
Beautiful sandy beaches and excellent loch fishing are within a mile and the golf course is only five miles away .
Private off-road parking is available and there is secure storage for bicycles.

Turn left from the Ferry Terminal and follow the road out of Castlebay, past the turning for Vatersay (spelt Bhatersaigh). The house is at the foot of Heather Hill, first entrance on the left hand side.
From Barra Airport
On leaving the airport turn left. Continue on this road until you come to a T-junction at Northbay. At this junction turn right and continue for about 7 miles. You will pass the reservoir, Barra Church of Scotland, Craigston and the Isle of Barra Hotel. You will come to the top of a hill from which you will see Castlebay. Ceum a Bhealaich in on the right hand side at the base of the hill, before the Vatersay (spelt Bhatersaigh) turning.
From Ard Mhor Ferry Terminal
On leaving the ferry continue on the road until you get to a T-junction. Turn left and continue until you reach a second T-junction at Northbay. Other Information
Ferries are the main means of access to Barra, there being two ferry teminals.
Castlebay is the main terminal and connects with Oban on the Mainland.
Travelling direct from Oban by ferry takes approximately five hours.
Ardmhor is the second ferry port providing a shorter crossing to Barra from Eriskay, from which travellers can access the Uists, Harris and Lewis. Typically this crossing takes forty minutes.
Both ferry routes are run by Caledonian MacBrayne.
Barra is famous for its airport at Traigh Mhor in the North of the Island. On Barra the beach is the runway and tides influence when planes arrive and depart.
There are flights direct from Glasgow and indirectly from Inverness (via Stornoway and Benbecula).
All flights are operated by British Airways.
