Shapinsay is a wonderful place for walkers, nature lovers, artists and of course those who just wish to relax in peaceful surroundings. Small sandy beaches, rocky shores and the craigs (cliffs) on the east coast surround this green fertile island. Walking or cycling is undoubtedly the best way to get around.
Location
Situated on the Shapinsay shoreline nestling in the quiet conservation village of Balfour. The front gardens here meet the shores of Elwick Bay which is a very popular meeting place for seals.
Shapinsay is a beautiful, low- lying agricultural island ideal for walking or cycling. Relax with nature while bird/seal watching - RSPB Reserve nearby. Being on a small centrally located Island on the North side of Orkney Mainland the property is ideally situated for visiting Kirkwall and the Mainland whilst experiencing island life as well.
Relax and enjoy the charming setting of Balfour Village in a touch of luxury. Here you are ideally situated for "Island pursuits" or "Mainland excursions" Literally two minutes walk to the pier from where the small friendly city of Kirkwall, with St Magnus Cathedral, is just a 25 minute ferry trip away.

Across the road from Peedie Whites Cottage is a very well stocked island shop which is proud to boast a good range of fresh fruit & veg, local and straight from their own garden whenever possible. Fresh bread delivered most days, fresh milk, meat, Daily newspapers as well as everyday goods.
A short stroll down the village takes you to The Smithy Restaurant which prides itself on its seafood and fresh local fair whenever possible. Lunches, evening meals and takeaways. Shapinsay enjoys two highly recomended licensed eating places. Hilton Farmhouse Restaurant is also nearby.
A few more strides and you'll find a welcome at The Gatehouse Bar.
Just a two minute walk to the pier with frequent ferry crossings every day to Kirkwall. Balfour Village is ideally situated for visiting Orkneys Mainland attractions whilst experiencing life on a small island. With Kirkwall being just a 25min ferry trip from Shapinsay you can easily visit attractions on the Mainland of Orkney whether historic sites, festival events or perhaps go shopping and return to the island the same day. Also the perfect retreat after a day at the Orkney Library in Kirkwall which is a great place for those studying genealogy.

Your arrival airport is Kirkwall. From here you are just a few minutes from MV Shapinsay ferry terminal by taxi. I would advise pre-booking your taxi. There is also an airport shuttle bus which takes you into Kirkwall dropping you near to the Shapinsay ferry by request.
