Things You'll Love

The location is stunning, set among rolling hills and with a feeling of being right on your own. Yet Campbeltown, the 'wee toon' is just three miles away. It is proud of its state-of-the-art new swimming pool and fitness suite, and also has plenty of interesting shops, cafes and restaurants. The owl centre is a recent attraction.

Owner's Description

Campbell Cottage is one of four holiday cottages in the grounds of Kilchrist Castle situated on the stunning Mull of Kintyre Peninsula. The cottages are only 3 miles from the sea and beautiful beaches and are surrounded by idyllic countryside. All the cottages have been refurbished in 2005 and offer cosy accommodation for a peaceful holiday in a very friendly part of Scotland.

The Mull of Kintyre has a dramatic coastline with lovely secluded sandy coves - perfect for picnics and swimming in the sea. Three miles away is the small town of Campbeltown, set around Campbeltown Loch. There is an abundance of things to do nearby: you can take day trips to the nearby islands of Arran, Islay, Gigha and Jura. You can watch birds and wildlife, or ride the surf if you feel more active. Campbeltown with its natural harbour, has a sailing club, cinemas (just one, the 'wee picture hoose', built 1913), there is a new owl sanctuary in Campbeltown and a variety of shops, stores and eating places. Further on are the cliffs of the Mull of Kintyre, made famous by Paul McCartney and Wings in the eponymous song - as the lyrics say "Dark distant mountains and valleys of green". The hills, lochs and bays of the Kintyre Peninsula offer an amazing selection of views, wildlife and tranquil communities. It is a very hidden part of Scotland where you feel you've stepped back in time to a more gentle pace of life.

Campbell Cottage is semi-detached cosy cottage on a ground floor level. It has an open aspect towards the castle. There are two bedrooms, a double and a single. The living area is open-plan and this cottage has a 'New England' feel. The cottage is designed for 3 guests, is non smoking and pet free. In addition there is a small laundry room with a washing machine and tumble drier. Power included in the rent, up to £20 per week.

Parking is in a shared car park adjacent to the cottages, and there is also a shared courtyard with a traditional lamp post and barbecue-cum-chimnea. An acre of land allows plenty of space to spread out for picnics or play games. Good walks can be enjoyed from the door.

Things You Need To Know

There are lots of jokes about Scottish weather and some of them are at least partly true! It can be wet and windy in Kintyre at times, so come prepared. But did you know that the West of Scotland is mild due to the Gulf Stream? There are even palm trees growing in Campbeltown! That is because frosts are rare.

Last May, some Australian friends staying at Kilchrist were heard to say, 'It's too hot!'
So you may be in for a pleasant surprise, but be prepared for anything. To see the Kintyre hills emerge from a mist is beautiful, to see the sunset over the Atlantic on a fine evening awe-inspiring!

Directions

Map View Map

You can travel by land, sea or air! But some forms of transport take longer.

By land
Drive to Glasgow, then over the Erskine bridge and on to the A82. From Loch Lomond onwards it is a beautiful drive and warrants a few stopping off places! You drive along at least five lochs, and the last part of the journey is along the stunning Atlantic coastline! There are also buses from Glasgow for the seasoned traveller.
By sea
You could take the ferry to Arran, and in summer there is a ferry off the other side of Arran direct onto the East side of Kintyre. In summer there is a passenger only boat from Troon in Ayrshire.
